Krafft-Ebing, Richard von

(1840–1902)
A devout German Catholic born in Mannheim, Krafft-Ebing took his medical degree at Heidelberg and practiced in Baden-Baden before leaving for the Styrian capital of Graz in 1873. There he headed a public insane asylum until 1889. He then went to Vienna, where he treated, among others, Archduke Rudolf (1858–1889), the son of Emperor Franz Joseph. His research was heavily focused on the paralysis associated with syphilis.
In 1886, he published his most influential work, Psychopathia sexualis: Eine klinishe-forensische Studie (Sexual Psychopathy: A ClinicalForensic Study), a small book that stressed the close association of sexuality with psychoanalytic theory. Drawn largely from courtroom cases, it went through 17 editions by 1924, growing greatly in size during the process. Pointing out the relationship of sexuality to all forms of human activity, Krafft-Ebing declared that both art and religion offered satisfactions and experiences that were linked with, and similar to, sexual activity. It was Krafft-Ebing who coined the term masochism, from the writings of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836–1895), who was living in Graz at the time the German psychiatrist arrived there. Krafft-Ebing’s compilation of sexual disorders was of great use to Sigmund Freud in his research; however, he rejected Freud’s notion of infant sexuality.
